Devonport
“After having been twice driven back by heavy southwestern gales, Her Majesty's ship Beagle, a ten-gun brig, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R. N., sailed from Devonport on the 27th of December, 1831.”
The third attempt to sail. Two earlier departures in December were driven back into Plymouth by south-western gales. Rookmaaker's day-by-day itinerary numbers day 1 as 28 December because it counts where Darwin slept, not when the ship weighed; the sailing date is Darwin's own.
