Privacy Notice
What this atlas keeps of your passage through it, written plainly rather than in the manner of lawyers.
What we record
If you have not been asked yet, or you said no: nothing. No cookies, no storage, no counting. Close the tab and no trace of your reading remains on your device.
If you said yes to measurement, Google Analytics sets its own cookies and records that a page was viewed — which page, roughly where in the world from your network address, what kind of browser and screen, and how you arrived. It is configured with Google's advertising features switched off, so it is not used to build an advertising profile of you or to follow you to other sites. Your choice itself is remembered in your browser's local storage under `chartedvoyages:consent`, which is not sent anywhere.
The site is served by a web host, which keeps ordinary server logs whatever you choose: the file requested, a network address, your browser and operating system, and the time. Those logs belong to the host and are kept under their own privacy practices; we neither add to them nor read them for anything but faults.
What we do not do
We do not ask you to register, and we hold no names, addresses or payment details. There is no account to create. We do not sell or rent anything about you to anyone, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not track you across other sites.
Measurement
Measurement is off until you turn it on. No analytics script is fetched, no cookie is set and no request reaches Google before you choose — declining loads nothing at all, so there is nothing left running afterwards to switch off.
One honest caveat about how this is built. The page's Content-Security-Policy has to be written before it is served and cannot know what you will choose, so on a build with measurement configured it lists Google's hosts as permitted. Permitted is not loaded: the tag is only ever injected after a yes. You can confirm it by opening your browser's network panel and declining — there is no request to make.
What it is for: knowing how many people read each voyage, so the work goes where it is read. Data is retained for 14 months and reported to us as totals. We do not sell it, share it, or use it to advertise.
You can change your answer at any time, which clears the stored choice and reloads the page so that nothing carries over:
Advertising
A fixed space is reserved in each ship's log for an advertisement, and it is presently empty. No advertising network is connected, no ad script loads, and no auction takes place. If a placement is ever sold it will be a self-hosted image and link served from our own files, with no third-party scripts and no cookies, and advertisers will be told how often it was shown and nothing whatever about who saw it.
Material from elsewhere
When you open the map, the site fetches its coastline data and the software that draws the globe from public code libraries. Those services can see the request, as any host can for any file on any page. We chose sources that set no advertising cookies, but we do not control their records — and on a metered connection the map does not load at all until you ask for it.
Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. The archival plates are not loaded from anywhere else: they are public-domain images copied into this site's own files and served from here, so viewing one tells no archive that you did. Each is credited, dated, and links to its record if you choose to follow it.
Narration
There is no narration feature at present, and nothing you read here is produced while you read it. Every word in these ledgers was written and reviewed before publication, and is served to you as a finished file. If spoken narration is added later it will be recorded in advance from that same reviewed text and served as an ordinary audio file with a transcript — nothing will be sent anywhere from your browser to produce it.
